The Watching

From our  

eating area front

of Toronto City Hall

we paused in our

conversation

seeing an older man

devouring

leftover fries and

 a bite of bun

withdrawn from the

refuse bin-

hunger must have

pleaded

for food as he ate  

regardless of stares from

onlookers & we

(wife and I)

were sad at his need-

seeing him leave

checked out his/our

tossed box of meager

smelly-good scraps

discovered not a

whisper of a crumb

left behind by this street

scrounger.
