Say the sun turns into a red giant tomorrow
Say the clouds’ water supply gets turned off – permanently because
they didn’t and won’t pay their bill
Say the wind suffers a massive attack of asthma and runs out of puff
Say they discover the moon is a wedge of Gouda cheese
Say the dish didn’t run away with the spoon and that the wheel
had never been invented and no one had said,
‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’
Say this cactus in its little orange pot’s a cowpat
Say our house is a gigantic cardboard box full of polystyrene balls
Say your mother was a tree and my father a stick insect
your sister a grain of sand, and mine – a sunburst
Say we take our last breaths locked together in a kiss
watching from a distant star the earth stop turning on its axis
holding close to our hearts a copy of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
and our goldfish and lop-eared rabbit – plus your avocado plant
grown, against all odds, from seed.
Say, all the above, mattered not a jot; that this was all that did
Say us, the you and the me and the here and the now was enough
Was a genius stroke of luck
