The Last Goodbye

Love, you are the world to me,
yet it’s time to call it a day.
Kidding ourselves, all along,
thinking we were in charge...
could shape our own destiny;
we – the work of art, not
the artist.
Too much melancholy,
and too much moonlight
have been our downfall,
so now, let there be an end
to it; the dawn – as rosy fingered
as it has ever been
and I shall still kiss,
with my mind, the white
of your neck as you lift
your hair to undo
your dress.
We are as sycamore seeds,
spiralling in opposite directions.
Hard, as it is, to let you go, love,
it is best to break free;
give hearts back their freedom.
As two kindred starlings
drenched with sunlight,
at long last, fledge –
leave their nest,
their destinations
predetermined
a tiny constellation
stippling the sky,
so part, fade
from each other’s sight;
far-flung voyagers
their exile brief;
a slight tilt of the wings –
a last goodbye.

As ever a beautiful poem with all those little details that carry a deeper meaning.
'We the work of art not the artist' made me think some people seem the perfect match from the outside yet are not meant to be together. Really touching visual ending with 'a slight tilt of the wings-' Lovely.

This is a beautiful poem with a rather beautiful but sad sentiment. It struck a chord with me to be honest.
The beat of your heart is the mellifluent rhythm to my soul.

Very light and airy in the letting go. Sad, but peaceful in release.
'and I shall still kiss,
with my mind, the white
of your neck as you lift
your hair to undo
your dress.'
Thats beautiful - see it, feel it all in one.
