New Beginnings (I.P.)

This is just to say,
Happy Divorce Day,
darling. All’s done
and finally dusted...
bar the alimony;
what’s yours
and what’s mine
more or less decided.
I trust you and she
are nicely settled in
to your brand new
love-nest. Who am I
to shake the tree?
Us three? We’re surviving.
The flat’s cramped but OK,
except...the kids – our kids,
hate their new school
and miss their friends.
And me? I miss the garden
but I’ll live – join the ranks
of the walking wounded,
probably.
Hope you like this card;
its crap, honestly, but
the sentiment behind it –
appropriate; addressed
to you both, naturally.
Lilies, so pure, so white,
and the loss – yours,
not mine.
Speaking of which –
I ditched that rug;
the one with those stains
where we...you know...
The one we bought
on our honeymoon
in Morocco, with tassels
we were attached to.
You see, it came to me
yesterday, whilst
cleaning the loo, actually,
that for thirteen years
and eleven months,
I’d been making love
to an Abyssinian goat;
a shag-pile, at that.

Hi Tina.
Hi Tina.
I love the offhand tone of the writing. There's a sad story behind the glib handling of the sentiments and you feel she is triumphant when the final thoughts came to her whilst cleaning the loo.
Lovely!

This poem had a great flow to it Tina, as Bee said, telling it like it is in such a matter of fact way.
Again you've written a piece to be proud of.

It must have been a good quality rug to have lasted thirteen years and eleven months! Can't say the same for the relationship, though. It is quite understandable to erase all memories of an unhappy life.
You caught the flavour of such an event with wit and perspicacity. Well done.

Ooh, a sharp one Tina. The cut of the sharp voice and that kick to his groin at the end is so satisfying.
