The Virgin's Tale

“I’m going to have a kid, Jo,
and it’s written on your face;
at worst, I’ve been unfaithful,
or, at best, a little late?
But there’s no one else – I swear,
Jo – and it isn’t some mistake.
Look...I know it all sounds crazy,
so, this ring is yours to take.
You think that I’ve been sullied,
and betrayed your precious trust
but I haven’t; nothing’s changed, Jo.
You’re the only man I’ve loved.”
“A fool, I’d be to trust those lips
that lied with every kiss!
What madness has possessed you
makes you spout such stuff as this?
Did the devil make you pregnant?
You sold your soul, maybe?
If you’re a virgin – pigs could fly!
Don’t play cruel games with me.”
“As God’s my witness, dearest Jo
I’ve been true to you, alone;
this child that grows inside of me
is His blessing on us both.
A messenger – an angel, said
I’d been chosen as the one
to teach this boy of earthly life,
and to raise him as our son.
So label me a whore, Jo...
feed the gossip, fuel the lies!
Cast me out – or marry me?
Let me know what you decide.
Only ask yourself one question
if you were in my shoes,
just how would you be feeling now;
scared, perhaps – and used?
I suppose I should be honoured...
not bewildered – all at sea,
to bear a child who’s born to die
on a cross at Calvary.
For pity’s sake, I beg you,
though he’s not your flesh and blood –
slate me, hate me, punish me...
only love him as our own.”

Tina, it could so easily have
Tina, it could so easily have been like that, but we were talking in a little study this week, how easily Joseph's strengths are forgotten, and not only does it say 'Joseph was a just (or righteous ) man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly' (Matt.1:19), but when he was spoken to by the angel, explaining things then, and, after the visit of the wise men, when Herod wanted to kill him, and later in Egypt, and when to return and where to go to live for safety, each time he obeyed and acted as a loving protective foster-father. Makes me think of many men whose words are few, whose fame is small, but who work very faithfully and kindly!

Colloquial language and
Colloquial language and conversational style are very effective in presenting this clever piece. Like the modern slant so much.Beautifully written. Sounds ridiculous but I'm sure children would benefit from this type of teaching on Christianity.
