Dad

Dear diary, keeping dad's memory.
Seduced by changing
tides of emotions,
dad your addiction
trawled through
troubled waters,
body cravings,
stained fingers
craving one
then another
till it was too late,
no longer like a gull
soaring on currant of air,
but on course for lessons
in riding waves too high,
but – you made your own
disease this powerful ally,
not drowning in affliction
crying at oncoming demise,
pain killers kept you afloat
a life raft of a smiles till end,
photos keep my memory alive
and lessons you taught me –
that situations like discomfort and fear
are a journey measuring time relevant
to ones own meanderings, giving focus
on power of strength in storms ahead.
Born 25th October 1930
Died 30th May 2004.
