Part Eleven of Twelve: The Mystery Of The Season Of All Hallows Eve
It was obvious to Kenneth that by unlocking the door Bridgette had unleashed some kind of phantom spirit. He then realized he'd not given one thought to his own escapade of the day with what was going on at home. He decided not to mention it till he'd sorted out the mess his family were in – then he wondered again if the two situations were connected in some way, as he thought it might have been in his dream.
Bridgette was so upset, now that the girls were experiencing their own nightmares. It seemed only Danny was calm.
Kenneth was now more determined than ever to get to the bottom of this situation. “Show me what you found son, we'll all go and investigate.”
Danny still not showing any signs of fear took his Father's hand and led him to the hallway, followed by Bridgette and the girls.
Kenneth took the lock off the door and placed it on the floor, as Danny shook his Father by the leg enthusiastically, desperate to show him what he knew. Bridgette passed the torch to her husband as he moved into the darkness, now he understood what his Wife meant by cobwebs, they seemed to attack him from all angles.
Danny crept passed his Dad compelled to show his Father. “Here Dad – baby here!”
Kenneth reached in and grabbed his son's arm, hearing a growling noise. “Come out Danny, I do believe what you're telling me, but it's dangerous.”
From out of the black the dark figure suddenly appeared like an inky cloud enveloping the child who still remained positive. Bridgette was beyond despair as a current of air began spinning resembling a whirlwind, completely engulfing the Reverand.
The girls were petrified having no idea what to do except stand back and watch in fear. Tears still welled up in Bridgette's eyes as they were overcome with panic and sadness.
A ghastly stench filled the blackness as the torchlight went out. Kenneth tried to move his hands to turn the light back on, but he was paralyzed and not able to move a muscle. The Reverand had no control, all he could do was wait.
He didn't have long as the visions came in flashes of madness, within the circle of wind surrounding them. Manifestations came and went in the blink of an eye. A Bear pit, phantoms of the past. Dogs attacking a Bear were visible to Kenneth. All he hoped was that his son wasn't seeing any of this.
It was a spectacle cheered on by a crowd of barbaric thugs, Kenneth thought they were savages from another time. Dogs ripped at the poor Bear's body as it tried in desperation to fight them off. Then Kenneth saw the ultimate horror, this poor Bear was pregnant. Kenneth didn't want to see anymore, but still the scene carried on playing out.
Eventually the dogs were called off as the bear fell to the ground. A mob circled her jeering at the poor dead animal. Then a robed man who Kenneth presumed was a Monk, cut open the Bears womb and removed the dead baby. It was all so distressing Kenneth screamed out. “ENOUGH! PLEASE TAKE IT AWAY! I UNDERSTAND.” He held his head suffocating with the putrid stench, just wanting to escape. “BANISH THIS VISION – NOW!”
It was only then that the pandemonium died down and the vortex that swirled around Kenneth disappeared leaving him almost loosing consciousness, but determined he held on by a thread of reality knowing his family depended on him. Kenneth could hear the cries of his daughters and the desperation in his son's voice calling him back. “Daddy! Daddy!”
The Reverend felt hands and arms pulling him away from the darkness and the soft voice of his wife assuring him it would be alright now. His sight was so hazy and he just wanted to sleep, but then he remembered the rocks and his son's words. Kenneth knew they had to remove the pile if they were to get any peace.
The Caretaker's words also lingered in his mind like a distant memory. A Vicar's body discovered on the beach one year the day after tomorrow. It was fast approaching 31st October, the Reverend shivered not only at the thought of what might come, but also because he was so cold. At that moment he could hold on no longer and blacked out.
It was the middle of the night when Kenneth awoke, he could hear the soft soothing voice of his wife declaring that everything would be okay. He lay with his head on her lap her fingers gently brushing the hair back from his forehead, she had such a smooth caress with skin like satin to the touch, that was one of the reasons he loved her so much, that and her kind heart.
Taking a deep breath Kenneth suddenly remembered the boulders that needed removing, sitting up too quickly he felt the blood rush to his head. Turning to Bridgette he indicated that there was much to be done and they needed to find out what was under the rocks.
“We'll move them but not now, tomorrow's another day.” She announced continuing to try and relax.
Kenneth was worried it might be too late. “What's the time?” He gazed into Bridgette's blue eyes pleading her with urgency.
“It must be about 3am, though it feels like I've been sat on this settee forever. The girls and Danny finally settled down and went to bed. All's been quiet since.”
The light from the candle Bridgette had lit flickered on the coffee table in front of them. Kenneth could hear the wind still blowing wildly outside. It felt strange to be suddenly so calm with all that had happened.
Bridgette shifted slightly pulling the knitted shawl further around her shoulders. “I think we should go to bed Kenneth, we can move the boulders at first light.”
The Reverend realized his wife was right, there wasn't much they could do now and sleep was most definitely what they both needed.
