Simon dashed over to the owl, but the bird hooted and flew off to one of the entrances hooting again. “Dad!” Said Simon, “I think he wants us to follow him.”
Varden shouted across the chamber, his voice echoing all around. “It's no good, those entrances don't lead anywhere, they're all dead ends.”
Brad quickly rushed over to his son. “Come away from there Simon – you don't know what's in that fog.”
But Simon was determined that the chamber and tunnels had been in his dream. “I need to follow Tawny Father, it's important.”
The others and the boys watched on, still confused about Varden's return, now afraid they'd never get out alive...all their chances had finally run out.
Grabbing his son's hand, Brad made a decision. “Well then – I'm coming too, if anything happens, I won't leave you on your own.” Father and son stepped into the thick fog, followed by Varden who didn't want to be left out. The other boys looked on, too afraid to accompany them. Dawson felt wretched at the thought of once more being a prisoner, knowing that this time he wouldn't be so lucky as to get away. In fact the only person that could save them now! He thought, was Cinnamon, she'd have to question why they never returned.
The three figures and the bird, kept close to the wall, unable to see through the mist even with the torches, though the owl had no problem flitting back and fourth, making sure the others were still there. Simon of course had no fear, it was as if he knew exactly where the bird was taking them.
Varden had never attempted to enter the tunnels the whole time he'd been down in the Chamber. Gregor had said that if any of the boys did try to enter the tunnels, they would be lost forever. Strange ghostly sounds filled the air as the little party ventured further, but still Simon remained unperturbed, knowing the owl would keep them safe. Brad felt a tension of claustrophobia with the heaviness of the fog, he never did like being in enclosed spaces and now wished his son hadn't decided to enter.
