Bracus became annoyed with Varden for not staying on board the ship. “What you doing running around? I thought I told you stay in my quarters,” he said grabbing the boy's arm.
Poor Varden was in need of some water too, the ale he'd drunk the night before had left a stale taste in his mouth. “Please boss...can I have a drink? I'm so thirsty.” He felt uncomfortable with the girl watching and tried not to look her way, but it was hard.
Cinnamon had a funny feeling that all was not well, as Bracus got them both a drink of water. She gazed at Varden, her expression of confusion was evident to the boy.
While Bracus had his back turned and was getting some tankards down, the boy put his finger to his lips indicating that she should keep quiet about knowing him. It was as if Cinnamon could read his mind, she knew immediately what he meant.
After a few tankards of water they both felt much better. “Right boy...you'd better go back to the ship and this time stay there, otherwise there will be trouble...understand?”
Varden nodded in agreement and gave one last gaze at Cinnamon, before wandering back to the ship.
“Why has that boy got to stay aboard your ship?” enquired the girl.
“He's me cabin boy and he does as he's told...not that it's any of yer business girl.” Bracus didn't like being asked questions from strangers.
Cinnamon felt distraught, wondering how her friend had managed to get caught up with this man. Now she felt like home would be the last thing on her mind. She decided to ask Bracus some more questions, to see if she could figure out what his plans were. “I was wondering if you had any plans to set sail soon?”
“Why do you wanna know? ain't none of yer business. You should be thinking about going home to yer family, they're probably wondering where you are and Gregor will be sending out a search party soon, you know how angry he gets when he don't know what's going on.”
“I...I know, but I came down here with friends and they have promised to take me home today, so that's not a problem.” Cinnamon realised that Bracus was quite clever and she would have to be very careful what she said in future, but she still wanted to know more. “Is the boy going with you on your journey?”
“You be asking too many questions girl...but yeah he's coming with us and we be sailing tomorrow.” Bracus had a lot to do that day, what with making sure the ship was loaded up with supplies which had been stored away in one of the caves. Gregor had been very generous with the amount of wood he'd supplied and Bracus couldn't wait to get started on loading the wood onto the ship.
Deciding that the girl was more trouble than she was worth and he didn't need any more problems, he told Cinnamon that he didn't have time to chat any more and so left the girl alone, making his way back to his ship. He also knew that it would take a couple of journeys to get all the supplies over to the Island, but it was most important that he get the children over there first, then once they were settled in and all the supplies were delivered, the elders would be able to put the boys to work building the cabins he had planned.
Now that Cinnamon had a better idea of what his plans were, she once again gave thought to Dawson, one way or another she would have to find some way of communicating with Varden. Feelings of frustration came over her, as she tried to decide on her next move. Lost in her thoughts, she hadn't noticed people starting to come out of their cottages, as the sun began to rise into the sky, peeping from behind the grey clouds.

Poor Varden. That man's a brute. (God I sound like Enid Blyton) The tension is taut and it's all in subtle glances, the unsaid.Carefully done, Jenny.

Back and forth between Cinnamon and Bracus tingled and added tension to the scene, Varden's presence only adds to the suspence, so afraid they will slip and say too much good read Ray
