donuts (life 4/?)

He missed food, any food, all food. He missed it like hell.

It’s not that he wasn’t used to the rationing. Three tours of duty in the middle of goddamn nowhere meant he was used to rations. Sometimes he even liked them… Sometimes those boil in the bag things were actually pretty tasty.

The smell and the texture weren’t up to much. Sure, it was simple, but it wasn’t bad.

He had to have a little laugh there: You knew you were hungry when you missed that boilinthebag bullshit; he was definitely hungry.

It was a cycle he would go through every time he was down there in his hole. Eyeing the scrub, watching them from afar; watching them doing their… things.

He used to be interested in what was going on out there, but now… Now he was farily detached from that whole aspect of it. Autopilot perhaps? Or maybe he just didn’t need to think so hard about these things now?

Once he had shot a few people, he kind of got numb to it; maybe, he thought, that was how people dealt with it? He wasn’t really sure…

So, now — whenever he was down there — he let the mind wander as it wanted. It made time go faster, which was no bad thing. But when it wandered in here, to food. He didn’t like that.

It’s not like he hadn’t done stints in bunkers or trenches before (or spent hours digging them), like he hadn’t been hungry before… but this was different. On a tour you knew you were coming back — well, assuming you made it back — you knew what was waiting for you at home, at least:

A meal, a beer, a goddamn donut…

It was strange now, how all that there was left were the sweet things. All the unhealthy, sugary, high-colesterol crap. They didn’t touch any of that, which was surprising (although he couldn’t really blame them for the most part). About the only thing you could be sure to find in a store was a donut.

Was it the way they were cooked? Or all the sugar? Maybe it was the texture… so unnatural.
