Aids and its metaphors 1

I take the title of my essay from Susan Sontag's essay on AIDS.
American culture is a curious culture. Americans like to say that they are a really sensitive people, and yet, we are probably the most callous when it comes to international issues. At the same time, American culture is sensitive in a sense. If you would excuse me, I would venture to say that American culture is "horny."
I know this sounds awful since America has a Puritanical basis, but in its culture, it really has gone the other way. Our trashy images of sexuality may reflect our native misogyny, our distrust of the motives of female and male sexuality.
Having said that, I want state that AIDS is not a homosexual disease. You can get AIDS as a heterosexual. Also, committing to one partner or practicing abstinence are good ways of not contracting STDS. Also, not drinking heavily when you are out partying keeps your mind sane and temperate.
