Jim Morrison was a hippy, but he was a hippy of a different order. Jim actually studied. Intellectual women were interested in Jim Morrison. Jim understood the uses of theatre in music before David Bowie and other Rock and Roll artists. He understood the darkness of America. Dionysius tears apart the individual and engages one in a participation mystique.
Jim went to various universities. In UCLA film school, he produced one of his first films in which he compared Hitler to a Shaman. This is one possible interpretation of Hitler but it does not really shed light on Hitler's behavior unless you want to state that Hitler was attempting to unify his and Germany's personality through genocide which seems like a careless afterthought. Anyway, one of the books that helped shaped his aesthetic was, "The Death of Tragedy" by Nietzsche.
Now Nietzsche has been given a bad name by Marxists but most Jews that I know or have read have read Nietzsche.
Dionysius was the God of Theatre, the God of the Unconscious. The masks of theatre amplified the voices of the actors. Dionysius was also the God of nature. Often we project our nature in nature. The darkness outside... we see our fears, our monsters. Theatre was a very serious matter for the ancient Greeks. In many ways, Hollywood is the modern equivalent of the Greek theatre although Hollywood appeals more to the workingclass than the upperclass. Dionysius is also the God of wine. He gives us sleep and rest after drinking a few glasses of good wine.
The origin of Dionysius is mysterious. He is a foreigner, I believe. The implication is that he might have been a Greek adoptation of a foreign God. Dionysius contrasts with Apollo who is the God of Light and a rapist according to some feminists. His priestesses were given prophetic vision through being raped during their menstrual cycle?
Rationality has its limits. There's something about thinking too much which is nonsensical. To not think is a virtue. Thinking creates differences. People argue about endless nuances. Are we even thinking or just rationalizing our tastes as something superior to others. Sleepless nights, thinking. James Joyce wrote Finnegan's Wake for insomniacs.
Dionysians don't think. They express their nature through the Will. Music is the manifestation of the Will in Apollonian society. Now, I know, some people are going to say this is Fascist thinking, but in Marxist societies, there's exactly the same thing expressed through ballet or opera. Exactly why Marxist society have kept these vestiges of the old aristocracy is a mystery to me. To continue, even primitive societies (nature societies) may possess such tension.
Now there is a way of getting out of the Dionysian trap. You simply have a government that levies taxes from the various cities you have conquered and then you dole out the welfare check, the education check, the social security check. This prevents dismemberment from the inside of the nation-state.
But Dionysianism has found a way out of that too. There is Apollonian order in a Dionysian culture. It is a pecking order that is formulated through natural contests of power. And power is like a drug. The more you drink power, the more you want. Power is very Dionysian. Pasolini's films of the novels of Marquis De Sade... these are reflections of the power structures of Mussolini. Beautiful women are attracted to powerful men because of vicariousness. Power is phallic like the columns of ancient Greek architecture.
