Artemis took out her bow early in the morning. She walked down the stairs with the bow and parked it in the back of her station wagon. She took out her David Bowie knife. She called it that. She drove off before sunrise.
She loved the mountains of New Hampshire. The fresh morning air greeted her. The sunrise was bleeding into the sky...
One shot. One shot. One shot.
She kept on repeating that. As Robert De Niro had in the Deer Hunter. One shot. One shot.
She rushed through the mountain. She imitated the movement of the wind. She was incredibly beautiful and she thought Echo was following her. She knew that it was illegal to litter food for the deer, but she did it anyway. THEN
she saw a beautiful, graceful deer
behind the patterns of the leaves
grazing
with her head down
eating something.
She pulled back the bow until the tension felt perfect SHOT
and pierced the dear's heart.
"You are going to serve in the Navy. You will be Top Gun."
"Only males are Top Gun."
"If you can't do that, you might as well move out."
Artemis had considered moving out many times. He father was a hard-drinking ex-marine. He had been through hell and he gave other people hell. Artemis had considered joining the Navy Seals, but she couldn't swim very well.
I guess it was the Navy then.
