"Can I please speak to Kevin?"
"Kevin not home," his mother said.
"Can you give him a message?"
There was a pause...
"What is message?" his mother asked.
Kevin giggled as he ate his dinner. The kimchi tasted delicious. He liked it spicy and cold. The warm soup with tofu and bean paste was comforting.
He called Jennifer.
"What do you want?"
"Why are you ignoring me?"
"I dunno."
"Do you know anything?"
"No. I know that I don't know anything."
"That's fucking great."
Jennifer hung up the phone.
The next day, Kevin tried to style his hair. He tried to make his eyes look bigger by pulling the lids upward and downward for five minutes. His eyes snapped back to its original form. He wished that he were white and blonde and blue-eyed. He walked to school with this thought.
Then there she was again, like an angel, next to her locker, speaking to the cool guys. How he wanted to be a cool guy...
"Hey Kevin," one of the cool guys called. Kevin looked around to see if they were speaking to someone else.
"Tell us something funny," the cool guy asked.
"I dunno," he responded.
They had a great laugh. The girl was laughing too and you could tell, she really enjoyed it.
Then Kevin asked, "Do you know?" Then she looked at him and seemed to see him for a little while.
"Know what?" she asked.
Kevin was sweating inside of his shirt and he was just so nervous. He felt like he was going to pee. Then he walked away.
"Kevin, what's the matter?"
"I think I got a crush."
"On whom?"
"On girl."
"I assumed that. On which girl?"
"On blonde girl."
"I'm blonde."
"On blonde, blue-eyed girl."
"What's her name?"
"Beautiful?"
"Real name, you fucking chink!"
"You meannnnnnnnnnnnn. Good chink or bad chink?"
"I didn't mean that. You've just been so frustrating lately."
"On Brook."
"Kevin, she's not really your type."
"You think I'm lesser than her."
"I don't mean it that way. I just don't want you to get hurt."
Kevin looked into Jennifer's eyes. They were so kind and almost spiritual looking. Jennifer was so pretty too and he didn't understand why she was friends with him. He hardly had any other friends.
