There she was again... Brook. She looked so beautiful to Kevin. Her blue eyes looked like stars in space. Her blond hair looked like the rays of a warm and embracing sun. He tried to walk toward her, but the floor seemed to be moving against him. No matter how many steps he took, he was in the same space.
"You want to see Ferris Bueller's Day Off this weekend with my friends?" Jennifer offered.
He looked up. He saw Jennifer blurrily. Then her face became clear and concrete.
"Sure."
"She's not all that great, Kevin. She's actually kind of shallow..." her voice whispered off...
"How'd you like the movie?" asked one of Jennifer's friends.
"It was funny. I liked the way he talked to me."
"Matthew Broderick. He's so cute." They giggled.
Kevin wondered what cute meant. Was he cute like a dog was cute or was he cute in some sense the girls admired.
"You're kind of cute yourself," one of her friends said. This made Kevin feel good. He was cute. He smiled at Jennifer for a short while.
"So what are you going to do with your life? Life moves pretty fast as Ferris says." Jennifer asked.
"I dunno," he heard himself say.
Some of her friends giggled. He liked the way they giggled. They were cute too, he thought.
"I'm going to be doctor," Jennifer said.
How did she know what she was going to be already? She was only 12. She said it with such firmness and dignity that it literally shocked him. She really wanted to help people get well. What was he going to be?
"I'm going to be a stand-up comic," he heard himself say.
Jennifer and her friends looked at each other and then gave Kevin a high-five.
"There aren't many of those around," another of her friends said.
"What do you mean?" Kevin asked.
"Korean stand-up comics."
"Oh..." Kevin stared up at the ceiling as if he were thinking something deep.
"Yes."
Kevin started to run through the night air. Jennifer and her friends followed. The streetlights shone brilliantly around them. The warm, night Spring air revived them.
