"Brook," Kevin said. Then he tried to look into her eyes. It was hard. He was so overwhelmed by her.
"What, Kevin?"
Now was the time, now he would ask her out. It was his moment in the spotlight. He had to prove that he could do it. He was courageous. He was fierce.
"I gotta go pee," he heard himself say.
Her face broke into pieces as if her face were a mirror. She was really laughing, laughing hard then she had to pick up the pieces of her face again and compose herself as much as a 12 year old could.
The truth was that he really did have to go pee. He might even have to sit down. He went into the bathroom and washed his face over and over again. Then he sat down on the toilet, just thinking. What was he going to do? This desire for Brook was taking over his thoughts and even his dreams. He dreamt about her. He dreamt that she was sleeping next to him. She turned her head toward him. She looked at him, then said, "What time is it? Is it time to ask me out?" He had other dreams about her too. He thought he loved him. If she could just get to know him, then she would love him too. Why was it so hard?
Kevin heard two kids walking into the restroom.
"Hey, you know that kid, Kevin Yu?"
"Yeah, the funny kid."
"Well, I convinced him that Brook liked him. I'm going to get him to ask her out."
"How'd you do that?"
"I have my ways. It's gonna be the funniest thing when he asks her out."
Kevin kept as quiet as he could be on the toilet until they left. So that's how it was.
Kevin walked home from school that day, feeling kind of blue. He didn't want to be funny anymore. He didn't want anything. He wondered why those boys whom he did not know and had nothing against wanted to make such a fool of him. He didn't understand. He thought about Jennifer and what a great friend she was. She cared about his feelings. What was he without his feelings anyway? Feelings made him feel good but also blue. He probably wasn't even meant to go out with Brook anyway. Why was he so damned sad though? He so desperately wanted some attention, but he also wanted to be alone now. He had been hurt.
He went home and slept for a while.
