Jennifer looked at Kevin. Kevin was looking down at his lap.
"I don't think I love Brook anymore," he blurted.
"Why?"
"I just don't."
"You were so obsessed with her."
"I was wrong. I was sinning. I was wrong against God."
"What do you know about God?"
"I know that he doesn't like me loving girls like Brook."
"Really?"
"Where is she, anyway?"
"I think she's sick, very sick."
"How do you know that?"
"I heard it through the grapevine."
"Oh."
"I'm supposed to like Korean girls anyway, aren't I?"
"I suppose so."
Kevin didn't really know what to say. He did know one Korean guy. He was adopted though. His parents has always told him that everyone was the same over and over again like a fucking tape recorder. His Korean friend thought he was white and acted so too. He did not get along with him.
"Why didn't you tell me?" asked Kevin.
"Tell you what?"
"That she didn't like me. That she found me cute like a puppy or something."
"I'm not clairvoyant, Kevin. I don't know what she thinks of you, even now."
"I should have known."
"Are you nice to me just because you feel sorry for me?" Kevin asked.
"No," Jennifer responded.
The next day, Kevin avoided everyone at the school. He thought that everyone was laughing at him because of his crush on Brook. He didn't know exactly how to behave, but he knew that he wanted to be taken seriously from now on. He wore as serious a face as he could and walked around, looking at the ground.
