New York, City of Gershwin. Jazz. Optimistic. Capitalistic. Brash and rude. New York. City of the Dutch. New Amsterdam. New York. city of fashion. city of those who do not belong anywhere else, city where you can make it big. Here I am, in New York.
I wanted to get away from my younger brother. He's supposed to be some kind of a genius, but he absolutely despises people. Did I tell you, he doesn't say anything to anyone. He says things in his mind to people. I know because he told me. He does speak to me, and sometimes I do translate his muteness into speech for people who want to know. Anyway, I got so very tired of all the attention he was getting. It was really hard for me to watch. My father ignored me. Sometimes, he would look at me as if he were wondering what my name was.
(Who is that girl in my house? Does anyone know her?}
I tried to take care of my younger brother, but he often smiled when I was miserable. I did OK at school, but not great. I was not particularly attractive. I was just a typical, ignored girl like so many Korean girls. Then, I got so sick of being ignored.
In High School, I excelled. That's how I got into NYU. I practised English with my younger brother. He does speak to me. I understand the language of the deaf, those who are deaf to the world. When I got to New York though, it was souless, deserted, and anonymous somehow. It didn't feel like the New York that I read about. I went clubbing with my Korean friends and drank alot. The city. Bright lights, big city. My little room. Barely have enough money to cover the rent. I think about my brother. People come and ask him overwhelming questions. They want him to be the great Korean genius and he doesn't care about anyone of them. Besides, they ask him questions about medicine and he is not a doctor. They ask him to help solve social problems. They think he is the cure, the Messiah, but he is literally like Alex from the Clockwork Orange although he is not really violent except in a funny way. I'm drunk. Can you tell? And I was screwed by some ugly guy looking for a sexual fix. He bought me liquor and took me to some musical. Actually, it was the Phantom of the Opera. (The Phantom of the OOOOOpera is Here). Are you drunk? I suppose not. Yes, I'm not a good Korean girl. Dutiful young daughter like Cordelia and my voice is not "ever soft and low, an excellent thing in woman" as King Lear may say.
