freud believed that eros and thanatos did not coexist in history or in the individual. instead, he spoke of the libido... a primary, impersonal, bisexual force as the dominant entity in the human soul. so i don't know if freud would have said that it is the rational ego that dreams when we fall asleep. it may be our primordial ego, pre-conscious to a certain level. eros or thanatos, on the other hand, dominate certain peroids of one's life or history.
so there is the level of symbols. things are not what they seem. in dreams, the latent content can come from the libido or the eros or at other times from the thanatos. of course, pure freudians would argue that it is the id-ego that dreams or rather that the rational ego is submerged into the id and reintegrates itself with its animal nature, but, as i said, i've been affected by carl jung. but this is the only way that it makes sense that dreams have a manifest content and a latent content. the formulation of the superego is also seen as a evolutionary development propelled by the process of sublimation which transfers or displaces our sexual, violent desires and integrates itself as an absolute signifier. by absolute signifier, once again, i refer to the process by which a dismbodied signifier becomes absolute via the meaning-producing mechanisms of the absent signifier and the structuralizing forces of society.
the symbolic level of dremas i find to be a formulation of childhood wish-fulfillment mechanism and they exist as entities that are pre-Oedipal, and as such, it may appear that dremas are all sexual or violent since sex itself must seem like a form of violence to a mere, unformed child. freud's formulation of the female genitalia as a mutilated phallus if one is to use phallus as merely symbolic of the actual being, the ontology of the penis, then makes sense.
