Speak, Memory

"What memory would you like to erase?" asked the head nurse.
"A... rape memory," Frederick started, "I raped a woman."
"Just one woman?"
"Yes. It just happened one time. I was out of my mind. I don't believe that I should be held accountable for one event in which I was not really myself."
"I do have to tell you that if your original memory of the rape has generated associations with other memories, those associations or links also have to be erased."
"Give me an example."
"Well... perhaps you remember the rape while having sex with other women. Your sexual memories with other women will be affected. Or perhaps when you raped that woman, you remembered the color of her dress or her scent. If that color or scent generate associations with other memories, they will be erased. We can't just erase just the memory and the links either, we have to erase more to ensure that the memory will not pop up again through some deviant systems of the brain."
"I understand. I want my memory erased," Frederick stated firmly.
"There's just one more part. We need to have the memory of the woman who was raped erased also."
"I was made aware of that."
"This is the hardest part for our patients, but if her memory is not erased, the fact of the rape lives on and you could possibly face prosecution. The erasure of your memory would do you no good."
"What if there is really no chance at prosecution? What if she would rather forget the rape altogether?"
"You must find a way to bring her in to get her memory erased. This way, our legal system cannot charge us with anything."
"I'll bring her in. Lastly, how much is the fee to get both of our memories erased?"
"$50.000."
