"M" is his chief contact in the British Intelligence Service. M is a woman. The murder of "M" by Sciarra begins the action of Spectre. In James Bond's personal autobiography, "M" stands for Mother. James Bond's very first failing was his inability to protect his mother from being murdered by Blofeld. This explains his deep desire to protect woman and yet his inability to do so. If he succeeds as a spy, he fails at his personal life.
One may say this is the secret of James Bond's charm... that he is impotent in one sense, he is really unable to protect or even save a woman. What he is able to do is offer an erotic exit to the paradox of life.
