Embers

As the candle flickers the lonesome video plays
And the scent of a thousand different women stays.
My cornered mind stares in violent dismay
At the shifting stolen scenery.
CHORUS
"Feel free to feel free;feel free to feel free".
That's what she said as I shook my head.
"What's happening to me?What's happening to me?"
That's what I said as I fell in bed with the dead.
There are Middle Eastern wars and the nuclear arms threat sticks,
And psychopaths everywhere who'd kill you just for kicks.
But nothing on this earth is as sick as this-
This carnival of smut and intensity.
Why I ever came here I will never know.
I see its parade of infamy and I feel so low.
And Aphrodite and Ares are giving such a show,
And I'm Hephaestus now, without a family.
(CHORUS)
The seedy streets are empty but for adventurers like me
And I see all the people I'd like to meet and like to be.
And I feel such a fool when she asks me to go slowly,
To not see her open fragility.
My hands are shaking and I'm starting to fret
From whiskey and nerves and cheap cigarettes.
And she's the strangest woman that I ever have met:
Arrogant, provocative, and melancholy.
(CHORUS)
Now her husband enters and my conscience says hello.
I take a deep breath and then dive down deep below,
But it's all so scientific and I just can't grow
To be the machine that you think I should be.
The candle's running low, and I'm still just the same,
And my disappointed energy's synchronizing with the flame.
And there's a felling in the air that I'm the one to blame
For my pathetic empty inadequacy.
(CHORUS)
Her husband's grinning at me, and I ask him not to stay,
But I'm still chained to the window, even though he's gone away.
And I'm sick to my stomach and I anxiously pray
That time won't be my enemy.
But then he runs in and punches me, and I'm shaken to the core-
Calls me an adulterer and calls his wife a whore.
And never again and never before
Would this chance come so easily.
2ND CHORUS
"Get out, please get out.Get out now, get out."
That's what she implored as I was down on all fours.
"What's this all about? What's this all about?"
But that they just ignored, and I crawled across the floor and out the
door.
