Bridges of Avalon

As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
Without looking back
You can hear, the sounds of screaming,
You can see, the red sky billowing forward
Eyes stinging, with tears falling
As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
Marching onward, toward death’s calling
Shivered bones, with no meat upon them,
Journey forward to battles calling,
Pushing on, as each explosion, daylights the night’s sky
Breathing, the reeking stench, of retching sick,
As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
‘Rat run’, the shards of bones and flesh and blood
The cross around your neck,
Sounding, against the ‘dog tags’ of war,
Those lying dead, around and before you
but for the demons in your head, you are alone
As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
And those that lie their head, upon the feathered pillow,
Without thought or care, wrapped in sleep,
And those that rest their head upon the earth
With hearts laid bare, and burdened, share
the world with sorrow
As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
As the terrors of death surround you in the night,
Oh men of war, that have gone before you
Cry out… ‘Tread softly on my bed of earth and bone’,
For in the hours to come, when death does call you,
By your name…be ready then, to journey home…
As you walk beneath the Bridges of Avalon
