In spite of the difficulties of the first attempt, Mo wasn't detered and slowly got further and further with each walk, it also became easier to move herself off the bed. In fact, within a few days she was able to get around the ground floor of the house on her own. True she still needed the walker, but it meant that she could shit and piss without assistance, two giant steps towards regaining dignity. She could also walk to the kitchen, which is where I'd moved my workspace to, so that her bedroom was now her private area, but she could find me anytime she needed me.
Two weeks after Mo had first risen from her coma we were playing hide and seek with a couple of dodos when Eddie rang the doorbell.
Of course, we had no idea it was Eddie.
"Hide," I quickly signalled to the dodos.
"They are hiding Terrence," Mo said "Besides that's the sign for folliage, not hiding."
"Folliage, I thought this was 'hide', I said, positioning my arms to four twentyeight.
"You need to move the arms forwad, their language is three dimensional, here, like this," she moved my arms forward slightly.
"How have you learnt this, you've only been here a few weeks?"
"I've fuck all else to do."
"You'd better hide as well," I said, "We don't know who it is."
"It's Eddie," Eddie shouted through the door. "If you're trying to be secret you're doing a really bad job, I could hear everything.
I unlocked and opened the door, to reveal a beaming Eddie.
"Hello Mo," he said.
"Hello Eddie. You should have phoned ahead, I have a hectic social schedule"
I could see him looking around, though clearly he had no idea what he was looking for.
How long have you been up?"
"Two weeks."
"You look great."
"Yeah, I was on the 'in a fucking coma' diet, it really burns through excess fat. And muscle. And turns your brain into rotting veg. You should try it."
"So who else is here?" he said to me.
""Nobody," I said.
"Okay, and who's hiding?"
"Nobody. There's just me and Mo."
"You're a strange person Terrence. So Mo, you're up and about already?"
"Oh yeah, I can walk all my way from my bedroom to the kitchen. For a treat I visit the bathroom."
"Well, now I know you're up I'll start making arrangements. It'll take a few weeks."
"If you're fixing my new identity I've always wanted to be a movie star."
"Might be a bit high profile, I was thinking lonely office clerk, somewhere mediocre.
"Great. Go for it."
"The Boatman said he saw a strange boat a couple of weeks ago," I said. "On the south side of the island, I've been keeping watch, in case it comes back."
"You need motion-activated web cams," Eddie said. "You've no chance of seeing anything just walking around."
"I was actually making an excuse to get out of your way so that you can have a private discussion. I'm sure you've a lot of things to talk about. Things I'm not allowed to know. I've actually got about 40 web cams positioned along the coasts."
"You shouldn't attract attention by buying things like that right now. We're trying to keep a low profile."
"Oh I have over a hundred altogether, I've had them years, I just repositioned them."
"You have a hundred webcams? And go for walks looking for secret boats on your secret island which isn't even on any maps. You must really want your life to be a Famous Five adventure."
"I use them for wildlife, you know, it's part of connecting with the island."
"You're strange Terrence, did I ever tell you."
"I think you mentioned it. Right, I'm off to look for the mysterious boat. I'll be about an hour, so say what you need to say."
"Yeah, and don't forget to take Timmy the Dog with you."
