Eddie returned a few nights later, unannounced as always.
We were highly boat aware by this point and Mo had asked all dodos to look out for boats and let us know, which is why a dodo we didn't recognise bounded through the catflap one evening while we were eating risotto.
"There's a boat approaching the main bay," Mo said, translating the little creature’s gestures.
We rushed to the bay in time to see a boat docking.
"It must be Eddie," I said. "The mystery boat has done everything possible not to be seen."
"It's a different boat from last time though", Mo said.
"He uses a different boat each time he comes. It's an attempt to confuse the enemy."
"Eddie," I shouted. Whether it was Eddie or not it looks odd not to greet a boat.
"Ahoy," Eddie shouted back.
"Are you here to take me away?" Mo asked nervously as Eddie leapt off the boat.
"Not yet, it'll be a few more days, a week at most. I'm basically here to check you'll be ready and take any last orders."
"Did I mention Brad Pitt as my idea travel companion," Mo said.
"Noted. If we change our plan and decide to marry you off to one of the world's most famous celebrities instead of hiding you away he'll be the first person we ask."
"Changing the subject," I said, "The mystery boat's back and the Boatman's been creeping about the island."
"Has he seen you?" he asked Mo.
"Yes, but only at night. It was very dark."
"I'll try and hurry things along. If I'd known I'd have brought arms."
"This isn't a war, Eddie."
"Yes, it is, Terrence. This is the biggest war there's ever been, you just don't see it that way because you live alone on an isolated island. The mega corporations that rule the world now are more powerful and merciless than the great empires of the past. They'd wipe this little island off the map at the drop of a hat."
"We're not on a map," I reminded him. This had the desired effect of shutting him up.
"I'd better go," Eddie said. "I just wanted to check you were both prepared."
"It sounds like you're doing all the preparation," I said. "We're just waiting."
"I mean mentally prepared. You realised that once Mo leaves the island then that's it. She has a new life, a new name, neither of you can ever see or contact each other again. Just make sure you say your goodbyes."
