My imagination was once again let loose on the place, but I was sure to keep a short leash on it this time, lest something escape again. The empty winding halls, mostly empty of course however, a man whose name has been lost to time once said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” So in theory, if I walk these empty halls expecting to see one of the creatures that have came across my path before: I'm insane. Fair enough, but more interestingly, if I walk these halls that I'm certain are full of those creatures but expect nothing to pop out at me every time: then I'm also insane. I can't win, so instead I will just sit in my room and try not to think too much about what, or what is not, in the ever darkening hallways.
Chapter Eight: Revolution
I’ve grown to realize that the more I know a person, the less I like them. Curiosity leads to intimacy, intimacy grows to resentment until I just can't stand them anymore. This becomes even truer when this person I get to know is the only person I have extended contact with, such as Adam after phase two started. I used to think he was a very respectable man but now I have dark fantasies about how I wished he was actually dead like he was in my dream that happened so long ago now. How different would things be without him? What does he actually do around here anyways? Is he just a puppet for those unseen forces controlling everything? Is he preventing me from getting answers? These are the questions that circulated around my head as I stood in my room surrounded by four pale walls. Day in and day out I thought about the possibilities and options that I have missed on my path so far, did I make the right choices?
After about a week of lamenting about my choices that have led me here I decided I needed something to change because it just wasn't working for me. This room now had too much unwanted emotion tied to it. I grabbed my now de-materialized weapon and shield and braced myself for the looming darkness that no doubt was waiting for me. As I exited my assumingly safe room to enter the low powered hallway I saw a flash of green that came from a vent above my head and left a toxic looking trail down the corridor. I reached for my sword and shield, or rather, the offline version of my weapons and as soon as my tense fingertips made contact with them, they rematerialized in my hands. Cowering behind the sturdy blue shield I made my way down the hall following the green trail doing my best to ignore every creak and strange sound that I heard and just trudge ahead. Around every bend, of which there were a lot, I would brace myself for impact. Around every bend I would brace myself slightly less because I haven't been hit yet. That was a mistake. After the 4th bend and going up the stairs, almost to the command room, a giant maroon red skull appeared out of the thinnest air possible and growled something at me in an ancient language that was lost to time. Suddenly, a multitude of visions flew through my head as I was suspended in the air: all of them were back on Earth. One was of Ancient Egypt, sand and pyramids everywhere and not a soul to be seen until I peered closer and saw one single ominous figure hunched down by one of the pyramids. Another showed marauders of the sea engaging in ship combat during a particularly nasty storm with a rival until a giant squid like monster emerged and seemingly crushed them both with one fell swoop. Yet another was of 18th century England, from the brief couple seconds I saw them it looked like they were bringing a lot of a precious metal into an old building. Lastly, I saw a 21st century park, mothers watching their children play however something seemed different here, one mother in particular looked distressed almost as if she couldn't find her child, then I saw a hooded figure get in his car and speed off. It would seem that the apparition used some kind of slow time effect on me as after those 4 visions ended my fall from the top of the stairs was almost over. That thing and those visions were nothing like I had seen. Leaving my room only caused more questions to arise when all I seeked was answers.
I quickly hurried to the command room while holding onto my now bruised head only to find a mob of ex-crew members encircling Supreme Captain Adam Lagaler. They must have all heard my emotions as I walked around that corner because there wasn't a single person that didn't turn around.
I heard Adam shout out “Who's there now? You had to bring in some more backup just for me, eh?”
Then he saw me, and I saw him sigh of relief that I wasn't one of them, he was in for a surprise I thought to myself. The mutineers looked at me with some sense of understanding, they wanted me to prove myself to them so they cleared the path to Adam laying down on the floor, his deep blue captains suit now stained with blood. His perfect hair and teeth now not so perfect. I rematerialized my sword and pointed the tip at his neck so my red sword drew some of Adam’s own equally red blood. His eyes now wild with fear as he scoots away until his back is now both physically and metaphorically against the wall. Not a sound is made as I swiftly walk, almost float towards the already defeated Adam and finish him off with one clean swipe to his head. The blood splatters on the very control panel I had examined many times before. A tinge of regret and wonder overtakes me as I stand with my boss’ head on the floor, his blood on the walls but his presence will always remain here. The mutineers looked to me as their leader.
Chapter Nine: Brotherhood
Adam was gone. I had all of Little Wonder at my disposal. Both of those things needed some time to sink in. What would I do? Where should I go? How long do I have before they send someone to investigate the empty signals we were now broadcasting? The answers to those don’t really matter when you’re on the search for answers. I transferred all available power to our engines and I set out to figure out what those creatures I’ve seen want. The Cream spiders. The green anomaly with the red eyes from my dream in Egypt. The red apparition from yesterday. Eleno. Who are these things and who or what is controlling them, and most importantly, what do they want with me. Somehow I thought if I just kept flying through space I would get somewhere or find someone that would be able to help me.
We couldn’t stop at space stations anymore because you need the captain to sign off on a form to land. That means the only way to get fuel and sustain is to steal, Little Wonder is not a ship made for combat or stealth, so this was extremely difficult. We ended up just making a straight shot towards an anomalous signal that our radars picked up. Hopefully it was something that would help us in some way, but that was doubtful, as with everything on this mission.
We reached the signal which seemed to be coming from a giant matte black pyramid constantly rotating in a circle. The tip of the pyramid pointed down and at the top there was a large opening that was made visible by a pulsating green light, almost like a heartbeat. Everyone cast a vote and majority stated that we would enter it, regardless of how the vote turned out we were going in anyways. This might be the lucky break that I needed.
We got caught by the pyramids tractor beam and were being slowly drawn inside the anomaly. I pondered the thought that this would be the last time Little Wonder would land. Upon exiting we were greeted by nothing but the darkness, something with which I am now well acquainted. The sudden scream of one of my men shook me right out of my thoughts. He was pointing his flashlight at the wall which revealed a myriad of black spiders with a white torso, just like the type I saw when I was in the abandoned house looking for Eleno. Another scream cried out from the darkness, his flashlight hit the ground pointing in the direction of where his body was being dragged away by a hooded figure.
Another one cried out “It’s a slaughter! Run!” the remainder of my men all tried to climb back into my ship, climbing on top of each other. Then, out of the corner of my eye I see the toxic green entity leaving my ship.. It walked as fast as my men could crawl away in fear. I, too was paralyzed with fear. The spiders, the new hooded figures, and most frighteningly of all, the green entity that has shown no sign of aggression. It began to approach me, as did the other species and things in this place. As the lanky green alien got closer, I could see facial features that I didn’t previously see in our first encounter. His face, it looked disturbingly similar to my own. He was now only two feet away when he just stops, and stares. I could hear the scuttering of the spiders behind me and without a doubt the top hat man that controlled them. To my right I heard the slobbering of the strange hooded creatures, they were muttering something in their language and I heard the name “Eleno”. Out of my left eye I saw the red skull from the other day floating there surrounded by darkness.
The green entity crossed his arms in front of me and slowly began to speak, “We-I have been watching you, but I’m not one for interfering with mortal matters. You’ve clearly done something to make all these enemies, I care not what is was, it might not have been in this life-”
I interrupted him by materializing my sword and took a hard slash at his neck. The room was silent. To my surprise(and everyone’s delight) the green alien did not falter, my blade went right through him. The hooded figures came over pointing their fingers at me as if making an accusation. One of them took my sword and quickly ran away.
“I made that weapon you know. As I was saying, I am the Spectator, I have been here for an eternity and will remain forever” He turned around and began to slowly walk back into my ship. He lifted up his fist in a signal as he was walking away, and that was when the hordes of space descended on me and my crew.
