“Reality is whatever refuses to go away when I stop believing in it”.
Philip K. Dick
Oh how I hate those who are dedicated to producing conformity. I would sum up my fear about the future in one word: mediocrity.
Allow me to explain. By believing passionately in something that still does not exist, we create it. And you know what? The great thing is you do not need to leave your room, although I feel it necessary to reveal at this juncture that the future is going to be boring, because while you were otherwise engaged everything around you is becoming science fiction, to the point where nothing is true and everything is permitted.
Desperation is the raw material of drastic change while the nonexistent is whatever we have not sufficiently desired. Take a moment and think about it; the world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked because it simply has no choice. It will simply roll in ecstasy at your feet. I, however, unlike those around me, cannot force myself to use drugs to cheat on my loneliness, not because loneliness is a cancer that eats at my very soul, but simply because it is all that I have - and when the drugs and alcohol dissipate, it will be all that my peers have as well. The suburbanisation of the planet will continue, and the suburbanisation of the soul will follow soon after. It’s as sure as night follows day. Remember - only those who can leave behind everything they have ever believed in can hope to escape. So my advice is to remain sitting at your table and listen.
On second thoughts, forget that last request. Instead, do not even listen, but rather simply wait for something good to emerge from the ashes of our oblivion, while never forgetting to be quiet still and solitary, for one thing is certain - silence is only frightening to people who are compulsively verbalising. In the meantime the future is just going to be a vast, conforming suburb of the soul.
And that, my friends, is my one true fear: that everything has happened, and that nothing exciting or new or interesting is ever going to happen again...
So I’ll leave you with one last thought.
In a completely sane world, madness is the only freedom.
