HER WEDDING, MY FUNERAL.

I shook hands the other day
With a young girl more than half my age
Who told me that she’ll live forever
“What, me get old? Don’t be silly. Never”.
She calls me sir
Though I’m not her teacher
So I took her to McDonald’s
To try and reach her.
That immortality stuff never turned me on,
For there’s no bright tomorrow after you’re gone.
Just a stone with inscriptions of God’s earthly powers
And a faded memorial draped in dead flowers.
We talk and we talk, intense conversations,
With no rules or logic or age reservations
I imagine a dark and depressing future
Of a mind slowly rusting, overgrown by dementia.
She says not to worry as she’ll come and see me
With flowers and kisses and hugs so sincerely
I’m touched by her passion, reluctant to mock
But words spoke in youth won’t turn back the clock.
Though as I get older I’ll never forget
Never feel guilty and never regret
The time that we spent as her plans they unfurled,
And how she is destined to change someone’s world.
So now we’ve agreed a contract for each other
A promise to keep like a sister and brother
So I’ll stand there proudly on the day she is wed
And she’ll mourn my passing when I am dead.
