Middle Ground?

It is said
That nature abhors a vacuum.
A more accurate statement:
"Nature abhors the different."
Observe:
Nature is substance.
Vacuum is nothing.
The creatures that today live
Live on in conformity
To their mother's demands.
The harsh mother
Who kills those unable
To overcome her ultimate challenge.
Nature abhors the different.
Humanity abhors the different.
It is, after all, only natural:
Like parent, like child.
We have gotten better.
Yes, we have gotten better.
We have walked the long road of cultivation,
A varied and treacherous road indeed.
But we have yet to reach its end.
Observe:
Humans abhor the in-between;
The moderate, the abstaining,
Those of us who dwell in greyness,
For in our new world
This is indeed the new different.
Clear sides
That polemicize and criticize
Have become the norm
In humanity's eyes.
The humanity that wages war
On the unconquered land
Caught within the vise.
Must I choose
Between my right hand
Or my left?
Can I not employ both
Or neither
As I see fit?
Why can my eyes
Be for women
OR men,
But not AND?
What can we do?
Those of us living
In the DCZ?
The De-Clarified Zone?
The residence of ambiguity?
That strange place
Vociferously contested,
It's residents whose existence
Is ignominiously ignored
Or dismissively denied
By our peers.
What indeed can we do
But gather together,
Assemble in the fields
Of the Disputed Territories
And as One we SHOUT:
"This is who we are:
We are NOT on the fence.
We are NOT indecisive.
We are NOT confused.
We DO have a place in this world.
We WILL be listened to
And we will NOT be ignored."
And if still they try to put
Their feet on your throat
Display your glorious grey badge
Shove it in their faces
And let them know
That you have a voice
AND YOU WILL NOT BE SHUT UP.
