Megaliths proliferate
on this barren hillside,
pillars from far and wide
of white limestone, basalt and granite,
standing blood rocks proud
with lintels of blue-grey Welsh slate
carved with tiny intricate spirals
and Satanic verses in Ogham script
scrawled across the altar stone
to ward off Iceni evil spirits.
The old man of the forest
once stood guard near here
with an iron axe to ward off invaders
who wanted to topple his stones
and steal his womenfolk.
He's buried over there
under yonder semicircle of sandstone
and he watches the dale still,
you mark my words, son.
