Once upon a time, in a far away kingdom there was a beautiful princess who was afraid to go to sleep at night because whenever she did she would have terrible nightmares.
The reason why she had nightmares was because her evil stepmother who was a witch, every night, would turn herself into an invisible ether; a fine sort of mist and, seeping into the princess's chamber through a keyhole would enter her mouth while she slept and, clouding the princess's sleeping mind would give her terrifying dreams.
In the dreams she would be pursued by an evil old witch through a dark forest and at the end of every dream the witch would catch her and handing her a dagger, would say, "End your life princess, do it now before it is too late".
And the reason for this, you see, is because, according to the custom of the kingdom, only if the princess were to die would her stepmother become ruler.
But then the Princess, desperate to be free of the evil dreams, declared that she would offer her hand in marriage to any man who could end her nightmares.
Many noble princes tried.
Each slept in her room with her over night; some stayed with her for many nights but, because they could not see the ether that the stepmother had transformed herself into, they could not see it seep into the room or understand what caused the nightmares.
One day however a suitor came who had a glass eye because he had lost his right eye fighting in the wars and, because of the glass eye, he saw the ether entering the princess's room as a black smoke.
Then the next night, before the princess went to sleep, he sealed up all the cracks in her bedroom windows and door with candlewax, leaving only the keyhole in the door open and then he waited beside the door, placing the opening of a bottle over the keyhole.
And, this time, when the stepmother seeped into the room in her ethereal form, because she entered the room through the keyhole she was trapped in the bottle and when the prince with the glass eye saw that the bottle was full of black smoke, he put a cork in the bottle trapping the stepmother.
"Let me out! Let me out!", he heard her call from inside the bottle.
But he didn't let her out and, instead, he put a label upon the bottle that said "Do not ever open" and had the bottle locked away.
And after that night the princess never again had nightmares and so, keeping her promise, she married the prince with the glass eye and they both lived happily ever after.
