Princess Ardolla pressed her hand flat against the window of her cell and felt the starless blackness outside.
"There's no escape", she thought to herself, a silver tear welling up and falling from her right eye.
And how could there be? For hers was a prison with no outside; a prison created by the dark scientist Malthos beyond the edge of space and time.
She could freely walk out of its door, there was nothing stopping her but, whenever she did she merely walked back in again.
"It makes no sense", she kept saying to herself, her mind aching with the dreamlike absurdity of it, "How can something have an inside but no outside?".
The door of her chamber dematerialised and Malthos strode in wearing the grey uniform of an Imperial star general.
"Still weeping, I see", he said, coldly, "Still hoping that your beloved Prince Alpha and the rebel forces will liberate you. Well you can give up your childish dreams of hope Princess. Only one other person in the galaxy knew the secret of how to break through my prisons wall of zero space, my assistant Dr Elfling and I had him crushed within a diminishing space cube"
"But why are you doing this, you monster?", asked the Princess.
"Because I want to marry you princess; have you rule the galaxy at my side and bear, with me, a dynasty of Imperial galactic rulers", said Malthos, "But before I can do that I must make you love me".
"But love is something that must grow naturally and freely", said the Princess, "You can't just force someones heart to love you".
"You can force someone to do anything, Princess", said Malthos, "Love is nothing but DNA, hormones and brain chemistry and when I am finished altering your mind you will no longer even remember your beloved Prince Alpha. You will love only me".
"I will never love you", protested the Princess, "Not in eternity".
But then, out in the darkness, what was that? She thought she saw something twinkling; a light like a star and it was getting closer.
"What is that...that thing?", she asked, pointing towards the glowing object.
But then, before her captor could answer, suddenly she knew what it was; some kind of space making ship, digging a tunnel of glittering spacetime through a wall of zero space towards them.
"Impossible", said Malthos angrilly, "No one but I know the secret of creating spacetime".
But then the space tunneling ship broke through the bubble of spacetime that surrounded Malthos's prison and they heard, via an airless sound transmitter, the voice of Prince Alpha shouting.
"Give up, Malthos", he said, "You will never get away with this. All the Nations of our planet have united against your tyranny and your robot armies are defeated".
Malthos scoffed.
"Robot armies, pah", he said, "I control all energy and matter. I could create a thousand new armies if I wanted to...but tell me... how did you manage to create a ship that can break through my prison walls?".
"Your colleague, Dr Elfling", said Alpha, "Had his mind copied and stored digitally in the event that you would have him executed. Naturally, when we informed him of his death he was only too happy to help us construct this ship".
"I see", said Malthos, "Well Dr Elfling may have cheated death but I can promise you, you will not".
And, saying this, Malthos placed a forefinger against his right temple, focussing his mind that was linked to his space prisons central computer and, as he did, outside the Princess saw a gigantic, metal skinned creature start to materialise out of nothing, forming from the glowing energy of space itself; a robotic space-serpent like something from a space-mariners myth that, quickly wrapping its steel coils around Prince Alphas ship started to crush its hull like a tin can.
Malthos began to laugh as he saw the damage his creature was doing to Prince Alphas ship.
"Stop this please", pleaded Ardolla.
"Stop it", said Malthos, grinning like a cat, "But I'm enjoying it too much".
Just then however, Malthos saw the Princes ship fire its retrorockets, reversing out of the constricting coils of the monsterous robot snake.
"Well it looks as if your brave, noble Prince is running away and leaving you", he said triumphantly.
But then, his grin fading, he saw a purple beam fire from the front of the princes ship, a beam that, darting left and right, started to shear away the fabric of spacetime from round about the monster and as the space around it shrunk, just like a ship inside a trash compactor and much to Malthos's chagrin the monster was crushed into a ball of glowing scrap metal.
"Damn, damn, damn, damn", shouted Malthos, seeing his gigantic, mechanical pet being squashed to nothing and, using his mind again, activating a glowing force wall around the prison.
But then, another beam firing from the princes craft, a hole of spacetime opened up within the force wall and then, out of an opening hatch at the front of the ship, the Princess saw Prince Alpha dressed in a shining gold spacesuit and propelled by a beam of light emmerge and come rocketing through the hole of space towards her.
Then, suddenly, as she backed away from the window there was a loud crash as Prince Alpha came smashing through it.
Fortunately the window was made of rehealing glass or they may all have been sucked out into space.
But then, leaping to his feet and grasping hold of Malthos, Prince Alpha threw him to the floor.
"You imbecile", said Malthos, looking up at him and smirking, "Your primitive displays of brute strength mean nothing here. My mind controls spacetime and he who controls spacetime controls gravity itself".
And, as he said this, Prince Alpha felt himself being pulled off of his feet as if by a strong gravitational force towards the ceiling of the room.
"I will crush you", said Malthos, his eyes blazing with a mania of hatred as he looked up at the Prince, "I will crush you against the ceiling".
But Princess Ardolla could bear no more and, seizing up a large shard of glass from the window that had been broken earlier, she rushed towards Malthos stabbing it into his heart.
Then, losing concentration as he cried out in pain, Malthos let Prince Alpha fall from the ceiling and, landing with his padded elbow upon the glass splinter, the Prince drove it deeper.
Struggling with his mind, gripping onto life with all his might, Malthos tried to summon his control of gravity to yank the broken glass from his chest but it was no good; he was growing too weak.
"There are some things that even I can't control", he sighed as, becoming motionless, he succumbed to death.
But then, throwing her arms around her Prince, Princess Ardolla held him tightly.
"I thought I had lost all hope", she said to him, staining his spacesuit with her tears.
"Nothing is hopeless aslong as there is love", said Prince Alpha, "Even beyond Space and Time".
"There's no escape", she thought to herself, a silver tear welling up and falling from her right eye.
