To Venus, greatest of all the Gods

There is no god more mighty
than gentle Aphrodite;
Jupiter’s bolts may pound
but our hearts make more sound;
Diana has her snares
but none, to love, compare
and brighter than Apollo
is that inner light we follow.
Mars gives courage to soldiers
but a lovers heart is bolder.
Saturn makes flesh grow old
but, on our hearts, he has no hold.
Neptune, god of the seas?
Compared with passion, what is he?
Pluto, king of the dead;
in his cold kingdom we’re still wed.
Our two hearts have telepathy
swifter than wings of Mercury
and Vulcan could not forge a steel
as strong as the love that we feel.
Dionysus, the god of wine
should try the grape upon loves vine.
Even Athena seems a fool
for love’s wisdom is such a jewel.
Now that all loves bright joys, I’ve seen;
I know Venus is Heaven’s queen.
