A Monkey's Smile

A monkeys’ smile is a half-arsed grin.
I couldn’t get that thought out of my head and I stared around the room, trying desperately not to look at those deep brown eyes of sadness staring up at me. My blue eyes followed the room around in complete regret.
‘Hey, look at me.’ Brown-eyes whispered.
I tried desperately to think of an excuse not to, but there would be no point. I closed my eyes and sighed, then looked down. Brown-eyes laid there staring up at me, nothing but worry filling her face.
‘I thought I’d lost you there, what’s wrong?’
‘Nothing…It’s just.’
‘Look whatever it is, I can’t cope with seeing you like this.’ She grabbed my chin. ‘Talk to me.’
I rolled beside her and tried desperately to think of a way of saying it, a way which would spare her feelings. Save her from floating into her own world inside her head and blocking me out instead.
‘Okay, well. The thing is….’
She sighed. ‘Just tell me.’
I turned her onto her side to face me, I looked deep into her eyes.
…….
…….
‘Monkey fell off the side of the bed, I kicked him by accident. I’m sorry.’ A huge grin spread across my face as I realised my trick had worked.
She tried to give me the evilest face ever but failed miserably as she began to giggle.
‘Don’t do that. You scared the crap out’ve me!!!!’
I grabbed her into a massive hug, laughing along with her.
We settled onto the pillows, and started to watch a movie.
Monkey lay on the ground, with his half-arsed grin.
The perfect afternoon.
