Shadowy Visions Of The Past

These days you've probably seen

more interesting cupboards than

mine, but lately I haven't felt the

need to shower my taste buds in

the joys that chocolate brings to most,

 

though I do recall younger times

ensconced on the settee with a

piece of devils food cake...

especially made with my own

fair hands; absorbing each velvety

mouthful with enthusiasm,

 

I remember every detail; biting into

that lure of tempting, dark, rich;

buttery topping – followed by the

overwhelming avalanche of flaky

sponge, with yet more icing wrapped

in an outpouring of sweetness that

melted in my mouth.

 

Many gaze with countenance at

cookbooks with alluring sugar rush,

adulation for the skillfully enhanced

images; leaving the chocolate cake

devotee with mouth-watering desire.

But these recipes are but a shadowy

visions of the past for me.

Interesting that tastes can change. I think sometimes you just need a change. I remember once a teenage son, saying with surprise that he suddenly didn't seem to want chocolate. I noted how much Christmas chocolate he had guzzled without realising. I think his taste quickly returned, but maybe more moderate.

I enjoy chocolate cakes, but ordinary chocolate, bars, or hot chocolate drinks more. Rhiannon

Hi Rhiannon,

you know I used to be able to eat chocolate, but since the late 70s I suddenly got an alergy to cocoa powder, and now even the smell of chocolate makes me feel sick. I think I ate so much of it when I was young, that my body became adverse to it.

Devils food cake is very rich and is definitely not for the faint hearted, but I did used to love it. Like you say, my tastes in food have really changed, especially since the doctor told me my cholesterol was too high, now I try and eat healthy foods and I don't miss the fattening things at all.

I agree with Tom - sounds amazing! I like a good piece of chocolate cake every now and again, but it can be quite hard to find! Thanks for all the chocolatey memories Jenny!

Hi insert,

I used to love baking cakes, I made all my sons novelty birthday cakes, and Christmas cakes too, I even used to sell them at my then local church fayres, but my baking days are over now. Like I was saying to Rhiannon, I have an allergy to cocoa powder, but don't miss the chocolate cake at all now.

I don't think you can buy Devils food cake in the shops. I got my recipe from an old early 1970s cook book my mum and dad bought me, it's so rich and I think a 1970s creation.

Hi Paul,

if you love chocolate there's plenty of it in Devils Food Cake, with chocolate icing and chocolate sponge, also chocolate filling...a real waist expander. wink but then I don't think you would have any problems with putting on weight, and you're still young.

I'm not sure if you can buy it, I've not seen it in any cake shops, or the supermarkets.

I'm reading about Babi Yar. A different kind of obssession with food. But we all need to eat. That's what makes us human as you show with a nice slice of humour.

Hi Jack,

I'm glad I could bring a bit of humour into this piece. The I P just bought back those baking days, and recalling when curling up on the sofa with a large slice of Chocolate cake was so comforting, but those days have gone.

I don't know who Babi Yar is, but it sounds like you're enjoying.

I'm just home from a holiday.

I always eat too much when I'm on holiday. I think it's something to do with human nature. 

But now I'm trying to get back to my fighting weight and your very descriptive words, lovely as the are, haven't helped a bit.

I hope next week's inspirational point is lettuce.

Hi Turlough,

firstly I'd like to say I hope you had a great holiday. I know exactly what you mean about eating too much when on holiday. In my younger days I loved all the fattening things too, but these days I tend to binge out on salads, and I eat a lot of fish, which leaves me feeling a whole lot better...not that I loose that much weight though.

Now you're back home, hope your fight with weight wins through in the end. wink
