It's that time of year again. Hopes abound, passions rise, the nation stirs from summer torpor, and Gary Lineker brushes off his cliches. Footie is back! The mighty Spurs are poised for Europe, 10 places above Arsenal after the first day of the season. Rejoice, rejoice.

Even my wife and daughter have become captivated by the wonderful cricket. I am spending many hours on my sofa explaining the intricacies of the great game - and then, just when I think it's all clear, they confuse wickets and overs again and it just all seems so hopeless. Keep watching Liana - it's magnificent.

TO ALL CRICKET FANS On behalf of the murderous type, PLEASE do not take Liana's mention of the rules of cricket to paste that bloody unfunny thing about 'one team is in and then they're out... and then another team is in and another is out... blah!' it wasn't funny the first time but people insist on crapping it out at every opportunity and it makes me want to kill again... and I've only just cleaned my whites!
