Chapter 4
Amber arrived home after a long walk to and from the petrol station. Amber walked into the house and put her keys on the sofa and made her way to the kitchen to make a nice hot drink of hot chocolate.
“No milk!” said Amber in disbelief as she shut the fridge door, great, just sums up my day she thought as she went straight back into the main room, picked up her keys and headed out of the door to the local shop.
Amber froze as she stepped out of her house while locking the door. That’s strange; it wasn’t foggy like this a minute ago, or so dark. Amber checked her watch, 11.32am, weird weather, probably down to global warming Amber thought as she began to walk around the corner and onto one of the back streets.
“What do we have here?” whispered Ronove as he sniffed the air, “could it be?” the creature moved within the fog that he had created to shield himself from other demons of his kind, Ronove was a type of soul stealer, praying on the sick and injured, he would suck the very souls out of their bodies only venturing to this plane of existence during a death usually. He smelt the air, it was a sweet smell that burned such demons noses, “An angel” growled Ronove, I would very much like an angel’s soul thought Ronove as he planned his attack.
The fog began to get thicker, so thick that it was difficult to see in front of yourself, then Amber stopped, the hair on the back of her neck stood up, and then she smelled it, a strange smell like sulphur or ash, something she recognised but couldn’t place where from, her eyes widened and a new sensation took over her body, not fear, but strength, something rippled through her blood like a vibration, she felt different, changed somehow. What’s happening to me? thought Amber as she looked around, eyes wide.
Then out of the fog a black staff swung towards Ambers head then disappeared back into the fog. Next a claw came at her face. On instinct Amber grabbed the wrist of the unseen foe and stepped forward into the creature, she held her right palm flat and thrust it upwards, into the man’s nose so hard he cried out in pain. The fog instantly vanished, and there standing before Amber was a man who had black eyes, blue blood was pouring out of his nose, but not a man, thought Amber, a demon, like in her dreams. Only Amber was sure this wasn’t a dream. The demon took hold of his staff as it instantly changed into a long sharp spear. He jabbed at Amber aiming for her throat, but Amber was too quick. She ducked down low, and spun around fast giving the demon another blow to his face, knocking him to the floor. Out of nowhere a sword flew towards Amber, with a quick flick of the wrist Amber caught the sword by the hilt and plunged it into the demons chest. The demon turned instantly to dust, evaporating before her eyes.
“What the fuck just happened?” Breathed Amber, her body shaking, not understanding what the hell just happened to her body, or how she was able to move like that, she hadn’t had any self defence training and sure as hell wasn’t a killer.
“That, Amber, was your first demon kill,” said a unknown man as he walked around the corner, with a smile on his face.
“And who the hell are you?” Asked Amber while holding out the sword in front of herself, ready to use it again, as she stood in a fighting stance.
“Michael,” said the stranger.
Amber stared at the tall, dark, handsome guy, his eyes were violet in colour and he had a kind face with a scar running along his right cheek, but that didn’t make him any less handsome. There was something about this Michael, something special, Amber felt like she had met him before but didn’t know where from.
“Well, Michael, would you like to tell me what the fuck just happened here, because I sure as hell haven’t got a clue?”
Michael strode over to Amber his eyes remaining on hers never leaving as he gently pried the sword from her grip.
“You just slew your first real demon,” repeated Michael as he cleaned his weapon and returned it to its scabbard at his waist.
“Sorry, I thought you just said first demon?” Amber coughed suddenly feeling like she needed to sit down.
“That’s because I did!” he said while smiling “If not, I’m pretty sure you’d be getting arrested for man slaughter round about now Amber, if I was you I’d be glad it was a demon and not a mugger, the way you threw that poor guy down, ouch!”
This must be a bad dream, I never woke up this morning that’s it, and the buzzer will go off any time now thought Amber.
“Trust me, this isn’t a dream,” said Michael while offering Amber his hand to pull her up from the floor.
“Hay wait a minute how do you know my name?” did he just read my thoughts? Thought Amber while taking a step back from Michael.
“It’s a long story, but you must trust me. I’m on your side, I will tell you everything you need to know, but right now you’re not safe, they will be hunting you now more than ever,” said Michael as he kept his eyes locked on Ambers. She didn’t know why but she trusted him, she was usually good with first impressions and this guy seemed ok, plus he didn’t freak out with what just happened, and seemed to know a lot about it too. Swaying slightly for reasons Amber did not know, she began to lead Michael back towards her house, like she was in some kind of a trance.
“I’d offer you a hot drink but we haven’t got any milk,” said Amber as she entered the house Michael following behind.
“That’s fine,” replied Michael “but can I have a juice please,”
“Sure,” Amber went into the kitchen and pulled two glasses from the cupboard and filled one with juice and another with vodka.
“To steady my nerves,” said Amber as she sat down holding the glass with both hands.
“I can understand this is difficult for you, Amber,” started Michael, “But I have known you, since before you were born, you have a difficult journey ahead of you. But you were chosen to fight in this war.”
“What war? chosen for what? I’m just a plain average girl who seems to be having a very bad fucking day up to now I might add!” snapped Amber, is this guy high maybe that’s why his eyes are like that!
“I’m not high,” replied Michael, “look the only way I can explain this to you, is if you will listen. It was foretold eons ago that there would be another Great War, but not in Heaven, but here on Earth. Judgement day is upon us, Amber. Satan has sent out the dogs of war, searching for the few mortals who were born of both worlds. Mortals like you. I know you have been having the dreams. The dreams of the darkness and the demons! Just look at what you did out there, no training and yet you slain him, like you have been doing this for years. You’re one of the chosen, Amber. You and others like you have been created to battle the forces of darkness, and beat the demons back to the fiery pits of hell which they crawled out of.”
Amber sat back in her chair with a confused expression on her face ok how come only kind of guy I meet is crazy and a Jesus freak! “So what exactly is it that you think, I am?” she asked as she stared at the handsome stranger who sat facing her.
“You? You’re a Nephilim....a half angel!” Michael frowned as he tipped his head to the side as if listening to something, then laughed.
“And I am not a Jesus freak.” Amber opened her mouth wide in shock Oh my God he can hear my thoughts, how embarrassing. Blushing Amber asked.
“How can I be half angel? I mean come on?” Amber took a sip of her drink then continued “I don’t even believe in God or angels. How can I be half angel? This has to be a joke.”
Michael gave a slight smile, she really was struggling to accept this, but he could understand why. He guessed being told you was half angel out of the blue one day was a bit difficult to understand, and thought about how he was going to present this to her, without confusing the poor girl even more than she already was.
“Well was an angel, and I’m real!” said Michael he didn’t know why he just blurted that out, it sounded much better in his head before he said it out loud.
Amber looked at Michael
“You’re an angel?” she said while raising her eye brows.
“Not any more but I was an angel, Archangel, Michael, actually!” he said proudly.
“Really?” she said making a face to herself planet earth calling weirdo she thought to herself.
“I am not a weirdo, and I was an Archangel,” said Michael as he began to get aggravated at Amber mocking him, fare enough she wasn’t saying it out loud, but she was thinking it, and that was like a broadcast on a very loud radio to him, one that he couldn’t switch off.
“Ok, how is it you can hear my thoughts?” asked Amber now sitting forward.
“I told you. I was an angel once; I still possess some of my powers. Now are you ready to fulfil your destiny?” he asked as he sat forward.
“What to fight evil and save humanity?” mocked Amber while laughing.
“Fine you don’t have to believe me, Amber, but how can you explain what happened before outside? You’re dreams?”
Amber thought about it for a moment “I guess I can’t,” she said simply as she sat back into the chair, as Michael began to tell her the tale of the war in Heaven and the battle to come to Earth.
