EYES UPON THE GROUND

Some walk with eyes upon the sky
Well my friends that is not I,
I walk with eyes upon the ground
Here new insights can be found…..
The pavement forms an urban skin
Pipes beneath like veins within,
Chewing gum freckles, dried puke moles
Patterns tattooed by black manholes.
Fag ends like unsightly hair
Dog turd pimples here and there,
Pee stain warts near late night bars
Cracks resemble self-harm scars.
Burger wrappers ride the wind
Food too fast to e'er be binned,
The take out cups from a coffee shop
Like autumn leaves they too must drop.
Empty bags devoid of sweets
The dregs from sundry other eats,
The ground is home to all this clutter
On path, on road, on verge, in gutter.
Still my eyes peruse the street
And then before my wandering feet,
A sight appears to lift my heart
A pavement Picasso and his art.
Chalked upon a paving slab
Now raised above its fellows drab,
A still life fit to grace my walls
To be rubbed out as darkness falls…..
I walk with eyes upon the ground
Here new insights can be found.
