Take My Hand

Darkness was within me,
Darkness all about me,
Darkness was my strength,
Darkness was my joy.
I was falling and did not know,
I was falling and did not care,
My soul polluted,
Lost in my darkness,
Then that day so long ago,
When your light first bathed my soul,
Its touch was searing pain,
Its touch was purest ecstasy,
I wanted to run; I wanted to hide,
The anathema that was you,
But your light was addictive,
And I a moth to the flame,
‘Take my hand,’ your words still ring,
‘Take my hand and never will I let you go’
The darkness within rebelled;
Demanded I strike you down…
My hand raised,
Gently you took it in your own,
And the darkness dispelled,
My fall arrested.
My reflection in your eyes,
What I wished to be,
My scarred soul,
Cauterized by your love,
Your trust and your joy,
Nourished me, strengthened me,
That which I was faded to the past,
The last shadows dispelled by your sublime light,
But the star that shines…
Your light did dim,
In desperation I fed it my love,
As yours had fed me,
But my love was not as powerful,
I did not have the strength,
To hold you too me, with me
And the light glimmered and died,
Shadows lengthen once more,
The darkness seeps back in,
My soul a sponge,
Your loss but fuels the fire,
I fight it now, for you,
In your memory I stand,
Against the dark,
Seeking the light once more,
But darkness gathers within me,
Darkness gathers around me,
Darkness promises me strength,
But I know now, darkness can never bring me joy.
