Let's Start Again

‘Let’s start again….’
We hear it all the time.
Lovers say it when the damage done is so alarming that the thought of change can no longer be ignored.
Politicians say it when they know that we know that the game is up.
Musicians say it when their sound echoes the disharmony of the group.
Teachers say it when their pupils are united in confusion.
………..‘Let’s start again.’
But actions speak louder
than the vented spleen
of a nasal passage.
History repeats itself
when we don’t change,
firmly cemented in the past;
shit-spattered statues,
scarecrows of salvation.
Repair the strident anus of a treasured battleship,
and restore the faded lustre of a Constable;
recreate essential work that never needed doing,
and replant seeds for the national trust;
reserve fraudsters a place in the sun,
and render supported housing to rubble.
(Repeat the process to renew recession)
Report, repel, repulse, repress, repent, repose;
and then they talk of transparency,
of starting afresh,
to cloud our resolve.
Transmogrification takes more than big words; it takes integrity, courage and honesty.
Respect, recover, reflect, revolt,
In reverse order, please.
When children finish something they love,
they say ‘Let’s start again!’ in earnest.
They yearn to do it again and again,
but they’ll learn,
once their spirit has been gouged from their soul,
and beauty has been beaten out of them,
to prepare them for this life.
Animals have no need to start anything again.
They’d be happy plodding the countryside,
eating, breathing and dying on the grass,
but if they weren’t killed and sliced and preserved in poison,
they wouldn’t be here at all.
Now that Mother Nature is on Her knees, poked and stabbed, spewing poison at us for benefits forgot,
Let’s start again.
Now that God is a homeless drunk that smiles upon us as we spit into his cap,
Let’s start again.
Now that rights make helpless fools of victims of crime,
and welcome the wicked like lost little kittens at their door,
Let’s start again.
Yes, let’s start again!
Now that there’s pounding music in the mosque and the church is a darkened shed for constant gardeners,
Let’s start again.
Now that children are having babies and the dispossessed look upon prison as their ancestral home,
Let’s start again.
Yes, let’s start again!
Let’s make the whole world sing in harmony,
just like in that Coke advert.
