Summer ...the First Time

Breathless, one summer,
at the top of a hill,
a blameless blue sky –
her skin, smooth as silk;
halcyon days –
a brief moment in time...
strawberry fairs
and sweet, lilac wine
lectures and lechers –
varsity balls...
cruddy, cramped lodgings
in all-hallowed halls
where we’d jump into bed
at the drop of a hat –
trade drags on reefers
in post-coital chats.
She’s filing her nails –
I build castles in Spain...
tell her I love her...
she laughs in my face.
Breathless, one summer,
at the top of a hill,
a blameless blue sky...
yet winter came, still.

With my daughter going off to college in New Hampshire two months from now I'm not so keen on the lechers. I like the freshness and unpredictability - nothing hackneyed here! Winter might have come to put a temporary damper to "halcyon days" but it can't erradicate the memory of happiness past or yet to come.
