Sins (Pt 1)

Today is Court Day, where men--as a change of pace--will be paid to judge each other, as opposed to doing it for free. Some go as far as to say its them “defending their country,” or some other lie they can conveniently tell themselves.
Today is Court Day, with a judge and a jury; two half-hearted, unsuccessful attempts at balance in a system controlled by the legal equivalent of a mercenary. The lawyer lives in law, and spends years learning it (usually) not to protect it, but to profit from it.
Some days, though, Court is more than a scheme for cynical men with hungry wallets: a time for justice and truth and righteousness. Typical men and women tend to forget how important days like that are, forgetting that justice is rare in an unjust world. Men like Edmon, however, do not.
Today is Court Day, and Edmon is charged with the choice to save a child or himself. Justice is blind, and Edmon knows it; he's a lawyer, after all. Fairness and Justice have been fairy tales and legends to him, and he was infamous in all of those tales until recently. His story's in his ashen skin and shuddering hands, the criminals he's saved and the innocents he's condemned. His profession was disgusting until he made it virtuous, and now he simply thinks his good works disgusting. He never wanted to be a lawyer, but his foster parents certainly did. His foster parents wanted what was “best” for “him,” and they got what they wanted.
Rumor says that poverty is what troubles Edmon, or the gangs threatening his client finding time to threaten him, as well. His ailment is no dramatic event or passing fancy, just a word: greed. It's a title blistered into his forehead, representing a place where his life begins and ends. Edmon was reminded what the word was to him on the day of his first trial.
