"I feel so flummoxed," cried Kitty out of breath, and wind blown. The day was old paper grey, damp and dismal. My mind set was so low it had smashed through the floor at the shop, where only five minutes before Phyliss had rejected my new design as being "Too old hat, try something else!"
"What's up?" asked Phyliss casually, "Have a hairbrush, you look as if you came through a bush ot two backwards..."
Kitty took the hairbrush and slapped it angrily through her hair. "I'm no cshe said bitterly, "My hair is a separate specie which lives on my head..."
"Get on with it," said Phyliss coolly, "Or I'll demand you get a haircut. Where's your design peice?"
Kitty glared at her speechless and bent down to pull out a large book. "I did four formal peices.... I thought I'd choose one of them...." She layed out her work. Pictures of four separate designs filled a large square and next to each she'd pinned a peice of material. You could see the potiential at once.
Phyliss looked through the pictures for about five minutes, "Alright," she said crisply, "Which one were you planning to do?"
Kitty pointed out the simplest of the four, "Easiest to do, and then add decor too." She looked up at Phyliss enquiringly.
"It's old hat," said Phyliss quietly, "I'll talk to your tutor. The fashions are swinging around again. I feel it's time for new."
She motioned us to sit down and pulled out her own design book. "Look, I'm not sure if you'd like these."
"Do you like them?" demanded Kitty inspecting one closely.
"I'm not wearing that," I told her crossly, "It's worse than the nappy pants..."
"Please yourself." she said, "Remember though, designers have to move on... in front of fashion. Now go re-design new."

After she left, Kitty started to cry. "It's no good. I feel as if I want to move on."
I knew just how she felt. Those dreadful people were still at it. Someone had suggested that we were all the same. I had hoped they'd repatriate them, she'd even confessed to wondering if she ought to offer to sell any property or land she or her family had owned in the area to a named person for a reasonable price so she could move on. It was obvious that the two sides could never agree.
