What Do You Say?

What do you say?
When you see her lips are shaking,
When she cannot draw a breath;
And you know her heart is breaking.
How can you ask?
When all asking seems like prying,
When the words you use fall flat;
And you dread that love is dying.
Who can you trust?
When the ground itself is quaking,
When the shivers freeze your spine,
Now the former doubts are waking.
Where can you turn?
When she turns again to crying;
When she says that you’re the one
That she needs to be denying.
Why can’t you act?
When you know there’s no forsaking,
When it’s lodged deep in your soul;
But you fear there’ll be mistaking.
Oh, when will it end?
She resorts again to sighing,
Speaking low of shame and guilt;
Yet you have to keep on trying.
All in hope that she’ll recover,
All in trust against the day,
When she’ll need her friend and lover;
But until then … what do you say?
