A Scared Girl

It’s not that he was a good guy,
Not that I loved him more than anything,
It’s not that he was thoughtful or sweet.
It’s not that he was madly in love with me.
No, that was not why I stayed.
It was that charm he had.
It drove me insane.
That passion-- about everything he did.
It’s that he took everything I had.
My love,
My heart,
My smile,
My self respect.
All of it,
He took all of it.
And left me--with nothing.
So wildly hurt,
I lost every bit of myself--to him.
Afraid to be with someone else,
My wounded personality and shattered heart,
Would scare them away.
In the same breath,
I was horrified to be alone.
Hated being by myself,
With my self incriminating thoughts.
I let him do this,
Take away everything.
Leaving behind a bruised heart and a bleeding soul.
A tortured mind.
A scared girl.

Familiar feelings well
Familiar feelings well expressed in this. I like the way the narrator, though feeling helpless at the time, gained such understanding of the role play in the relationship and learnt so much from it.
