Yes, ducks do seem to be contented creatures whatever the weather - but especially when it's raining!  Aren't they the oddest creatures to look at too?  How many permutations of 'natural selection'  must have taken place to produce them I wonder.  Mandarins especially are beautiful (especially the drakes) fantastic colours and 'iridescent' plumage as you have mentioned in this lovely, simple, naturally observed poem.  Excellent.
