Rape is certainly not an easy subject to deal with. It's a very serious subject and can equal social death for a woman besides the transmission of STD's. I want to discuss rape in terms of sports and why rape is so often associated with sports.

Sports is a contest that involves a struggle and sacrifice. Sports, in itself, is not evil. Sports are good in many ways and fosters a healthy sense of competition and teamwork. Having said that, sports does have its associations. One of them is sex. In fact, sex is a contact sport in its basic essence.

It is easy to say that in ancient Greece, sports often had associations with prostitutes and nobles. That's why there is so much rape in college campuses. Fraternies are like the Temples of Apollo in which rape opened the eyes of a priestess to the possibilities of clairvoyance. Certainly, there is an Apollonian Order that sports stars seek to protect, but there is a deeper problem here.

The basic problem is power and how power is handled by sports stars. Although sports stars have a certain amount of power, their power is very alluring. Most of the power of athletes is in high school or in college. I do not want to speak of professional sports for the power of professional sports lies in nostalgia and false ideas about what life was like in high school. High school is a very tough and troubling time for most teenagers, and I don't think many people were "happy" in high school.

Anyway, sports stars have little or no political power. Most sports stars have little or no political convictions and they are encouraged to stay away from politics altogether. Then, what is the power of sports stars?

Their power lies in the power of cool, the power of sexual dominance, and the power of being envied. They learn to despise the weak, and see women as mainly flesh that desires them. Theirs is a false sense of being desired by all types of women and even men, all who want to have sex with them although many may despise them. It is really the ego of the alpha-male at work, the power of thanatos glorified in war movies and such, and the belief in the absoluteness of their attraction. They don't believe that they rape. They believe that the girl wanted it but couldn't admit it.

I know this is a radical simplification, but this seems to be the attitude of many athletes. They are protected by lawyers and other who defend their position. From the woman's point of view, it is really a basic misunderstanding of her mode of desire, which is more multiple, more subtle, and more deliberate than the male ego with its linear constructs. The woman may not say no, but she means no. Legally though, this makes no sense. Why can't the woman say NO? It can be somewhat explained by the fact that socially, women are not expected to say NO. Just say NO! Is it really that simple?
