Always there – on that broad chest of his,
a small, silver crucifix I gave him
for his 21st. A figure, slightly tarnished,
hanging there; arms making a V sign
at the sky...just where his skin was warm
and damp from a shower – glistening.
That small, silver cross, catching
the light...the colour of the rain
as it pooled in little puddles, along
the tilted lane led to our house...the one
he was born in – where we lived, happy
ever after, till Afghanistan...the Army,
spirited him away.
The small, silver cross, always there
on that broad chest of his...catching
the light...the colour of my tears of grief,
and anger, now lies – cradled in my palms,
and I as He, make a V sign at the sky;
silence saying it all, when we ask,
Why?

The crucifix motif is
The crucifix motif is exceptionally powerful as a symbol of lost belief in death. Add to that the warmth of his skin, the location of his home, the shatter of war and you've got agony in palmed hands. An exceptionally strong piece of work on the basis that you've used a very minimal image in repetition to convey a whole life.
