The principal was stunned by the events of the past hour and could do nothing but stand there, looking on in disbelief. The end of the day school bell rang and student began to pour out of the building. An ear piercing scream came from the court yard; Beth took off running towards the screams. A large crowd of students stood in a circle around a girl laying on the ground, she was gasping for air; her blue eyes open wide.
Beth pushed through the students and saw the horrific scene. “EVERYONE GET BACK! GET BACK NOW!” She was showing her badge and looking at all the students with their cell phones out filming the incident, instead of helping the poor girl. Once the students backed off she tended to the girl who was choking on her own blood. A small but very deep incision had been made across her left carotid artery and she was losing blood fast. Beth rolled her onto her left side and propped her head on her left arm that was extended outward. Now that the girl was in the recovery position Beth ripped off a piece of her shirt and wrapped it around the girl’s neck and applied pressure. She got on the radio and called for immediate backup and for a bus to Buckley High School. The wounded girl looked up at Beth still fighting to breathe, she looked into her eyes as her breathing became less frequent and shallow. “No, no, no, you hang on sweet heart! Help is on the way don’t let go yet; don’t give up on me!” Beth said while choking back the tears. The girl’s grip on Beth’s arm loosened and her hands fell; her breathing abruptly stopped as her head rolled to the side, her eyes staring wide.
Beth couldn’t do anything but hold the poor and cry. The ambulance arrived moments after her death along with the backup. Beth looked up to the distance and noticed a very tall man stand up by the tree line, a long dark hood pulled over his face; He slowly turned around and disappeared into the woods. “THAT’S HIM! GO GET HIM, GET THAT BASTARD!” She screamed.
“Who?” asked one of the cops, “I didn’t see a thing.”
“HE JUST RETREATED INTO THE WOODS! GO AND GET HIM, HE IS WEARING A BIG HOODED JACKET. GO NOW!” She roared.
The officers took off into the woods as the EMT collected the deceased. Beth sat on the ground looking at her blood soaked hands, vowing that this would never happen again; no one else would die on her watch.
