Epiphany
And here she is...just two minutes old;
seeing her, like falling in love
all over again.
Little did she realise it then, she’d left
her exclusive, silent world for good;
silent but for the thrum
of the drum-beat of life
she’d grown used to
for the last nine months...
that this world, she must share with others -
more treacherous than she could possibly
have known
eyes – closed in dreams as they laid her in my arms,
for the very first time.
The noises...the voices the drone of machines –
all ceased, while she nuzzled at my breast
and my heart drank her in
and by her cot calla lilies shed their petals...
ambergris and red.
Tell me she’s not really gone...the air – static,
shimmering, electric with escape,
glittering...
as the slit caul through which she slipped
on being born.

There seem so many similarities between birth and death. I always find that comforting, to be honest. This is a beautiful poem.
